How to Choose the Right Voiceover for Your Video

You've got your script. You've got your video. Now you need a voice.
But with thousands of voiceover artists out there, how do you choose the right voiceover? It's not always as simple as picking the voice you like the most.
Think about your audience
Before you start listening to demos, think about who you're actually talking to.
A corporate video aimed at senior executives probably needs a different voice to a TikTok advert aimed at teenagers.
Ask yourself: Who is listening, and how do I want them to feel?
That will immediately narrow things down.
Think about the tone
What should your voiceover sound like?
Maybe you want something:
Friendly and conversational
Confident and authoritative
Warm and reassuring
Energetic and exciting
Serious and professional
Quirky and fun
Try to find a voice artist whose natural style is close to what you're after.
And don't be afraid to ask them for a custom sample if you're not sure.
Don't forget the accent
Accent can make a surprisingly big difference.
Are you looking for a neutral British voice? A regional accent? American? Something else entirely?
If your project is aimed at an international audience, think about how easily your chosen accent will be understood.
There isn't a "best" accent — there's just the right one for your project.
Listen beyond the demo
A voiceover demo is designed to show an artist at their best, but there's more to choosing a voice than simply liking their demo.
Check out their other samples if they have them.
Do they sound natural? Can they change their delivery? Does their voice suit the subject matter?
And most importantly: can you imagine that voice representing your brand?
Still not sure?
You don't need to have everything figured out before contacting a voiceover artist.
Tell them what you're making, who it's for and the kind of sound you're after.
A good voice artist should be able to help you work out what fits.
